Information Security Policy

Security is a Shared Responsibility

Everyone has the right to privacy, and to freely express their opinions and ideas. With those rights come the responsibility to respect the privacy, opinions, and ideas of others. Computing resources are used every day at McMaster to enhance educational opportunities, enable research, and support the University’s mission and vision and the ideals of Forward with Integrity. Use of the McMaster University network is a privilege, and should generally be limited to those uses.

  • Access only the resources you’re allowed, and use good judgement when accessing them.
  • Protect those resources by installing all security updates on your computer, and by configuring security software such as antivirus and personal firewalls.
  • Choose strong passwords, don’t share them with anyone, and change them if you think they’re no longer your secret.
  • Respect the rights, opinions, ideas, and property of all others at the University.
  • Report any known violations of this Policy, or any other concerns to IT Security.
The Information Security Policy is your resource that will help you make better decisions to protect individual privacy, intellectual property, and the reputation of the University. Protect yourself, respect others, and help keep McMaster secure.
